What many people don’t realize is that the deep ocean is also the largest ecosystem on Earth, teeming with life forms that defy imagination. From bioluminescent jellyfish to ghost sharks and ping-pong ball sponges, these creatures thrive in conditions that would be fatal to us. A detail that I find especially interesting is the vertical migration of twilight zone creatures, which pull billions of tons of carbon into the depths annually—a process vital to mitigating climate change.

However, this delicate balance is under threat. The same manganese nodules and hydrothermal vents that support unique ecosystems are now targets for mining, driven by the demand for metals in green technologies. What this really suggests is that our quest for sustainability on land could destroy the very systems that keep our planet alive. The Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone, a biodiversity hotspot, is at risk of being stripped of its nodules, which take millions of years to form.
